Strong Phone Business Leads LG to Record Sales

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

LG Electronics posted full-year sales of more than W40 trillion for the first time in its history (US$1=W953).The Korean electronics giant said Wednesday it recorded W10.91 trillion in sales and W380.9 billion in operating profit in the fourth quarter of last year, including the performance of its overseas operations.

The sales figure is an all-time quarterly high, and the operating profit slightly outperformed market expectations. The company posted full-year sales for 2007 of W40.85 trillion, an increase of 11.2 percent from 2006. Operating profit was W1.23 trillion, up 46.2 percent year-on-year. The performance was driven by the firm’s cell phone division, which posted W10 trillion in annual sales and recorded 8.5 percent growth in operating margin.

In just the final quarter of last year, the cell phone division posted sales of W2.92 trillion, up more than 10 percent year-on-year, and saw its operating margin increase 8.8 percent. LG’s display division posted W3.97 trillion in sales and reduced its perennial operating deficit to W10.9 billion. The company expects the display division to earn a profit this year, an LG Electronics executive said. LG Electronics aims to achieve US$50 billion in sales this year, a 10 percent increase from 2007. It lowered its forecast for the foreign exchange rate from W900 per U.S. dollar last year to W885 this year.

Phone Makers Win W300 Bil. Tariff Suit

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Several mobile phone makers have won a W300-billion (US$1=W947) lawsuit against the Korea Customs Service for import duties levied on multi-chip package memory products, a key component in mobile phones. The Seoul Administrative Court sided with LG Electronics in its request to cancel W22.4 billion in tariffs imposed by the customs service on MCP imports. The court also ordered taxes be canceled for Toshiba (W42 billion) and Pantech (W3.7 billion).Samsung Electronics is also expected to win a similar W150-billion suit which is scheduled to be ruled on soon.

The customs service has slapped over W300 billion in tariffs on 140 MCP importers. Combining flash memory chips and S-RAM, MCPs are used for data storage in cell phones. Manufacturers have imported them as integrated circuits which are not subject to tariffs since 1998.But the KCS categorized MCPs as devices subject to an 8 percent tariff in 2004 and demanded back duties on products imported before Jan. 2006, which brought about the lawsuit. The court denied taxation on MCPs, citing their non-independent functionality.

Active Slider Bluetooth Headset used to answer and end calls

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Slider cell phones are definitely rising in popularity, especially those made by LG and Samsung, so it only makes sense that the sliding mechanism gets implemented in related technology as well. I’d imagine that the i.Tech i.Slider Bluetooth Headset isn’t the first to headset to feature a sliding mechanism, but it is pretty cool that you can use that to answer and end calls. It’s an active slider, much like what you’d find on the LG Chocolate or the Samsung U700. When a call comes in, you simply extend the microphone boom and start yakking. When you’re done explaining where you were last night, you retract the boom and continue on with your day.

For those you who don’t like the slider, there is also a multifunction button like most other Bluetooth headsets. Then again, if you don’t like the slider, you probably wouldn’t buy this device anyways. Other notable specs include the ability to connect to two phones simultaneously, a weight of 9.5 grams, Bluetooth v2.0 Class 2, up to 4 hours of talk time, up to 80 hours of standby, and your choice of silver or purple-black.

Broadcasters Gear Up for Cell-Phone TV

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

U.S. TV broadcasters will be ready to start transmitting signals for portable electronics like cell phones next year, the developers of the technology, LG Electronics Inc. and Harris Corp., said Sunday. The technology represents a chance for broadcasters to challenge cell-phone carriers, who are trying to sew up the market for mobile TV with their own transmissions. “This is going to let broadcasters get back in the game,” said Howard Lance, chairman and chief executive of Harris, which makes broadcasting equipment. But it’s doubtful that the Mobile Pedestrian Handheld, or MPH, receivers developed by LG will make it into cell phones in the U.S. market, which is tightly controlled by the carriers.

LG’s president and chief technology officer, Woo Paik, said MPH is also suitable for other portable devices, like media players, navigation devices and laptops. The cost to build TV reception capabilities into these would be “minimal,” Paik said at a news conference ahead of the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Broadcasters “realize the great opportunity out there in reaching customers who are now more and more on the move,” Lance said. Harris has conducted field trials of MPH in Chicago and Washington. Expanded trials will be conducted this year, and broad coverage is planned for 2009, Lance said. MPH uses an available part of the digital TV broadcast spectrum, and the necessary equipment is easily added to existing TV towers, LG and Harris said.

Competing technologies include MediaFLO, developed by Qualcomm Inc. and deployed by Verizon Wireless, and DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting-Handheld), championed by Nokia Corp. and adopted overseas.

Momail will continue to expand its offering across many countries throughout 2008.”Many consumers will receive a mobile phone this Christmas, and of course we hope they will be used for mobile email and Momail. Momail makes it very easy to get started and its patented technology optimizes every email for each mobile’s specific requirements, thus, saving an average of 82 percent of the data traffic to the mobile.
