LG’s 5 megapixel camera phone the KU990, called the Viewty, has made an appearance at this year’s GSMA Mobile Asia Congress 2007 held in Macau. The KU990 follows in the footsteps of the popular iPhone-like LG Prada. This candy bar styled phone has a large 3-inch LCD touch screen with a resolution of 240 x 400 pixels and sports 256K colors. The Viewty has a Flash UI (user interface). The LG KU990 has an inbuilt memory of 100MB and also supports external memory through microSD cards. It’s also 3G enabled with HSDPA for faster connectivity. Speaking of connectivity it’s also Bluetooth v1.2 enabled with A2DP compatibility and USB v2.0. The main feature of course is the 5 megapixel, auto-focus camera with a Xenon flash.
The KU990’s camera is also equipped with anti-shake image stabilizer and face-tracking software and even manual focus should you wish to get a bit more ‘professional’ with it. What the Viewty also incorporates is an application that allows users to upload videos to the net to sites like YouTube and there’s another photo editor application for making changes to images shot through the camera. The best part about the camera is its ability to capture 120 frames per second. There’s also a VGA camera located in the front for video calling.

Austrian mobile network operator ONE launched ‘ONE COMPASS’ a new location-based service for mobile subscribers on 11th June. Based on Nokia’s mPosition solution, ONE COMPASS will allow users to seamlessly receive a wide range of location-based useful information. The location-based information may either be retrieved by SMS or WAP. With ONE COMPASS Leisure, customers are able to identify for instance the nearest live event, cinema or dance club. It answers questions such as: “Which movie starts soon in the nearest cinema?” or “Where will the next jazz concert take place?” The category “Free admission” lists all events with no admission fees in the neighborhood. With categories such as “live music” or “party” there are no obstacles to spending an evening creatively. ONE COMPASS Information makes provisions for emergency situations. This service offers the addresses of the nearest hospitals, pharmacies, banks or police stations, regardless of whether the customer is looking for a pharmacy or a restaurant. Users may select even further within individual categories, for instance according to the type of restaurant (Italian or Chinese) or opening hours (meals after midnight). These exciting service possibilities are made possible with the industry-leading Nokia mPosition solution.
Nokia mPosition finds a subscriber’s physical location and presents them with new value-added services made to order for that particular place on the map. The Nokia mPosition solution makes use of intelligent applications, multiple location-detection methods, location middleware and mobile terminals. The 3GPP standardized location methods used allow operators early access to specific markets with a cell ID-based solution, as well as with more accurate neighboring-cell measurement solutions. The methods provide an investment-secured evolutionary path to E-OTD (enhanced observed time difference) and A-GPS (assisted global positioning system) covering GSM, 3G (WCDMA/EDGE) and All-IP RAN networks.

For companies in the CDMA market without expertise or experience in GSM, the Wavecom product affords the opportunity to slap this module into a handset, complete with IP indemnification licensing, carrier approval on the GSM network, and the necessary chips and other licensing, and offer up a GSM phone just like that. These companies would otherwise have to approach a dozen or more organizations for licensing of essential IP for GSM and get those licenses within the typical two-year time frame. Wavecom offers a CDMA module as well. Everything is included in the price of the modules.
Wavecom’s approach circumvents individual license negotiations for OEMs like Gateway, HP, and Handspring that are entering the wireless space without these relationships. With Wavecom’s MUSE Platform Open MMI (Man Machine Interface), customers can develop unique user interfaces. “Developing MMI used to take a huge team of resources, 20-30 people working on MMI development. We now offer that as part of our module package,” says David McCartney, vice president of marketing and business development, Wavecom. Wavecom brings its own GPRS protocol stack, the Wavecom stack. “You don’t have to have half a million dollars up front and a dollar a unit included in the price [to get a GPRS stack or licensing],” says McCartney. Wavecom has a license from Sun to include J2ME in its WISMO chipset module’s software packaging. Wavecom has developed its own baseband to control new baseband features like AMR technology (Adaptive Multi-Rate) for U.S.-based GSM networks and EDGE phones.

A review by Geek.Com on Qualcomm’s new eagerly awaited devices ‘Fairbanks’ and ‘Anchorage’. The first model was the “Fairbanks” a handheld portable media player with GPS functionality. Basically the company got a solid GPS unit, slapped on a micro-SD slot, added live television playback, threw in a 3MP camera (video or still), and got this. It’s poised to be the next generation of GPS products as Qualcomm has a lot of faith in the expansion of functionality in GPS products as well as a belief that their assisted GPS is way ahead of the competitions. The device uses a lightweight GUI and this particular version is based on Windows CE, though any OS should work.
The other model, the more exciting one for most people, is the “Anchorage”. This is based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platform so it will use a 1.0GHz processor (said to operate at 1/2 watt peak) along with WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, cellular, and a lot more good stuff. The unofficial word is that Snapdragon will offer close to the best power/performance ratio of anything on the market. The Anchorage device will be aimed more at productivity and the test model I saw had a QWERTY keyboard. The form factor of this model was a lot like the Nokia N810, but the actual design will be whatever OEMs want. So far we know that Samsung and HTC are on board, but there are a few others that are not official yet.
Anchorage and iPhoneh
The Anchorage was running Windows Mobile 5.0, which was only used for display purposes as any OS, even a full OS, can be run on the 1.0GHz processor. It also has the camera with video recording, GPS, and live TV playback capability. Because it has a cellular signal it will be prime competition for a device like the HTC Advantage, though it will also compete against products like the Nokia N810 and Sony mylo 2.Everything is still in its early stages and things will change a lot once the OEMs get their hands on them and start to customize. This may mean lost/added functionality as well as many different form factors and large swings in the price. All we do know is that we should start to see the devices released by the end of 2008, possible early 2009.

Samsung Electronics has completed development of the world’s first CDMA2000 1X mobile phone (model: SCH-X590) with color display and embedded charge-coupled device (CCD) camera. Building the camera into the phone makes it easier to use than having an external camera attached. The phone not only takes high-quality pictures but also can then transmit those images wirelessly.
The embedded digital camera can rotate 180 degrees to conveniently take pictures from any angle. It comes with a 4-power zoom lens and has 20 different aperture settings to capture the best quality images. The SCH-X590 can store up to 100 photos in its memory, and the multi-display function allows the user to search through the image archive as many as six at a time. The stored images can also be posted in the display background. A mobile phone with color display and embedded camera has many uses. People no longer have to keep an emergency camera in their automobile to record the details of an accident. Pictures can be taken freely during ones travels or at some major event and then sent immediately to friends or colleagues. The SCH-X590 has all the standard features of a high-end mobile phone. These include a 40-chord progression polyphonic ring tone and support for online multimedia services (NATE). The Korea Standards Association selected the SCH-X590 for its 2002 Technology Frontier Award on April 18. The selection was based on the innovative technology, high quality, competitiveness and convenience of the product. Samsung Electronics unveiled Korea’s first mobile phone with external digital camera (300,000 pixels) in February of this year.
By now introducing a model with embedded camera, the company is well positioned to lead the camera phone market. Moreover, Samsung is scheduled to unveil additional breakthrough mobile phone products next month. These include a folder model with color screen and built-in camera that can rotate 360 degrees and a synchronous IMT-2000 model that can display motion pictures on a color TFT-LCD with a color gamut of 260,000. The latter product can be used to transmit live images of the speaker’s face during conversations. The new mobile phones with color display and embedded camera will retail for around 500,000 in Korea.

Paris and Kuala Lumpur, August 3, 2002 - Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE:ALA) announced yesterday that it has conducted the first voice, data and video communications on the end-to-end UMTS trial system installed in Kuala Lumpur by Alcatel. For the very first time in
Malaysia, a UMTS infrastructure network carries not only voice communications in circuit mode but also allows the transfer of data and high-speed video images in packet mode, in full compliance with W-CDMA 3GPP standards.
These calls were demonstrated to the media in
Kuala Lumpur today. Numerous tests have confirmed the Alcatel Evolium(TM) UMTS infrastructure’s quality in the area of high-speed data and video transfers. Whether for videophony calls between two 3G handsets, urfing the Internet (Web Browsing), having on-line access to information, images or videos (Video Streaming and Downloading), or for transmitting video images from a remote Webcam. The Alcatel 3G/UMTS pilot network provides data rates of up to 384 kbit/s.
Alcatel installed in Kuala Lumpur its complete Evolium(TM) solution including the UTRAN (UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network) radio systems, the Core network; as well as the associated Radio Network Controller (RNC) and a dedicated Application Service platform. The radio systems, which include the UMTS base stations (Node B) are developed and produced by Evoium SAS, the joint venture between Alcatel and Fujitsu. “In 2000, Alcatel provided
Malaysia with the first end-to-end GPRS solution.
Today, we are proud to bring the real 3G age to Malaysia by conducting the first mobile multimedia call here, said John Quaeyhaegens, Country Senior Officer of Alcatel
Malaysia. 3G offers great potential for end-users because of the high bandwidths available for wireless multimedia applications in addition to voice calls. Today
’s call proves that Alcatel is the only vendor to have 3G networks already operational, which can support the full range of 3G applications.”
