Strathclyde Partnership for Transport ( SPT ) and network operator Arqiva have announced a ground breaking deal to provide a combined cellular and Wi-Fi network across the 15 Glasgow Subway stations. Under the agreement, Glasgow will become the first UK city to provide passengers with combined 2G and 3G cellular mobile and WiFi access. Arqiva Wireless Solutions division will begin deployment of the network later this month, with initial testing at Buchanan Street Subway station.
The new network will enable Subway customers to access the internet and mobile phones at stations, and provide public access to WiFi services. This unique WiFi project is part of the massive programme of Subway modernisation and efficiencies being undertaken by SPT, which sees great potential in using WiFi technology to migrate some of its existing applications and services, including ticketing, onto the network. Gordon Maclennan, Assistant Chief Executive of SPT, said: “This is a real milestone for SPT as the state of the art technology employed will realise our ambition of continuous improvement to services on the Subway.“ Accessibility and connectivity are vital in today’s fast moving technology environment and I’m delighted that SPT has enabled Glasgow to set the standard of being the first city to provide both 2G and 3G phone and WiFi coverage on the Subway.
“The new network should also reassure our customers that we are regularly responding to changing passenger needs. Any application which enhances passenger safety and delivers better services is high on our agenda.” Howard Williams, Business Development Manager for Arqiva Wireless Solutions Division, said: “As the UK moves closer to wirelessly-enabled areas the benefits that wireless networks, such as the one contracted by SPT, can provide are being recognised and cities need to capitalise on this.

Hutchison 3G is to launch a sweeping attack on the UK’s mobile phone operators by undercutting their existing voice tariffs when it starts its new service this year, The Business reported citing industry sources. The move will put further pressure on the revenues of Vodafone PLC, Orange, MmO2 PLC and T-Mobile, the newspaper added. Citing industry sources, the newspaper said Hutchison plans to pitch its new service — called 3 — on heavily-discounted voices services. It said the tariff structure, offering rate packages that work out at least 15 pct lower than existing mobile phone deals, will set Hutchison on a collision course with the other four operators headed by Vodafone.

Austrian mobile network operator ONE launched ‘ONE COMPASS’ a new location-based service for mobile subscribers on 11th June. Based on Nokia’s mPosition solution, ONE COMPASS will allow users to seamlessly receive a wide range of location-based useful information. The location-based information may either be retrieved by SMS or WAP. With ONE COMPASS Leisure, customers are able to identify for instance the nearest live event, cinema or dance club. It answers questions such as: “Which movie starts soon in the nearest cinema?” or “Where will the next jazz concert take place?” The category “Free admission” lists all events with no admission fees in the neighborhood. With categories such as “live music” or “party” there are no obstacles to spending an evening creatively. ONE COMPASS Information makes provisions for emergency situations. This service offers the addresses of the nearest hospitals, pharmacies, banks or police stations, regardless of whether the customer is looking for a pharmacy or a restaurant. Users may select even further within individual categories, for instance according to the type of restaurant (Italian or Chinese) or opening hours (meals after midnight). These exciting service possibilities are made possible with the industry-leading Nokia mPosition solution.
Nokia mPosition finds a subscriber’s physical location and presents them with new value-added services made to order for that particular place on the map. The Nokia mPosition solution makes use of intelligent applications, multiple location-detection methods, location middleware and mobile terminals. The 3GPP standardized location methods used allow operators early access to specific markets with a cell ID-based solution, as well as with more accurate neighboring-cell measurement solutions. The methods provide an investment-secured evolutionary path to E-OTD (enhanced observed time difference) and A-GPS (assisted global positioning system) covering GSM, 3G (WCDMA/EDGE) and All-IP RAN networks.

Anthropics, a British developer of visual messaging services, has announced that it is trialing its FacePlayer technology with network operators.FacePlayer enables users to send and receive realistic talking head animations as multimedia messages (MMS). The system uses advanced lip synchronisation technology to animate a face and have it speak aloud a string of text.Users will be able to download FacePlayer to a Nokia 7650 device and start sending messages immediately. Anthropics is working with a number of operators to have the capabilities installed as standard on smartphones. In a statement the company said: “FaceWave messaging is set to transform the way we communicate today - providing substantial new revenue opportunities for operators, advertisers, music and entertainment businesses, news and information services worldwide. Unlike other multimedia messaging applications, Anthropics’ FaceWave service produces perfect lip-synching, photo-realistic 2D characters, over low bandwidth and using low processing power. The Nokia 7650 trials reinforce Anthropics’ strategy to reach mass market on GSM, GPRS and 3G ’smart’ phones during the next six months.”

New World-Class Channel Measurement System Deployed for 3G+ Multiple Antenna Technologies for Infrastructure and Handsets While 3G (third generation) wireless technology is just beginning to roll out in the wireless communications world, researchers at Motorola Labs are already researching potential technologies to significantly enhance the performance of 3G.”3G standards are continuing to evolve as the industry moves through 3GPP Releases 4 and 5 and 3GPP2 technologies, such as 1xEVDV. Motorola and others are working on various approaches in order to determine optimum standards and system requirements, but one thing that is certain is that the technology needs to deliver higher data rates to the consumer at a lower cost per data bit,” said Dennis Roberson, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Motorola, Inc (NYSE: MOT).
One technology that has been proposed for delivering that higher data rate at a lower per-bit cost is the use of multiple antennas for both the cellular site and handsets. Theoretically, multiple antennas have been shown to enable major increases in the data capacity, peak data rate and voice capacity. However, the actual achievable performance depends on the properties of the radio signal propagation environment. Accurate models that characterize the propagation environment are key to predicting the true channel capacity improvements.
