Siemens launches a world-first for communication between machines

Monday, August 20th, 2007

The Siemens Communications Group is adding new GPRS radio modules for machine-to-machine (M2M) communication to its product portfolio. The new functions include a world-first in the form of the Java-based and quadband-capable TC65 module, which can be used in all GSM networks. The Java TM Open Software-Platform makes it possible to control the customer application with components integrated on the module, such as a processor or memory. The TC65 is also available as a plug-and-play terminal version with standard interfaces.

This enables fast and simple integration of the product into the customer applications, e.g. an alarm system. A further module, also offering these standardized mobile radio and connection capabilities, is the TC63 which is intended primarily for integration into simple M2M applications, such as vending machines. Both modules will be available from Siemens and specialist dealers . The Java-support provided by the TC65 gives developers a complete hard- and software platform for a simple and fast realization of M2M applications. The u se of the integrated module components, such as the powerful processor and a comprehensive flash memory for the customer software, allows system integrators to save material costs and bring their products to market more quickly.

The Java-module includes the latest Information Mobile Profile (IMP) Version 2.0 and supports wireless software updates over the air interface (OTAP = “over the air provisioning”) and secure data transfer through HTTPS and PKI-standard . The TC65 is also available as a terminal variant with a robust housing and all standard connections. The TC65 combines the Java programming function with premium mobile communication functionalities including quadband technology, which allows the module to be used in all GSM networks worldwide. A GPRS Class 12 device (class 12 is currently the highest GPRS class), it also offers an integrated TCP/IP stack for IP-based services over GRPS connections. All of these functions are also available without the Java TM open software platform in the lower priced TC63.

The modules TC65, TC63 and TC65 Terminal have a wide range of interfaces for straightforward integration into M2M applications. I 2 C bus, SPI bus, USB, serial and A/D and D/A converters are just a few of the alternatives provided. The new lead-free products are produced in accordance with the EU guidelines governing the restriction of use of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic devices (RoHS) and thus already fulfill all the relevant conditions one year before the corresponding law comes into effect. The Siemens Communications Operating Group is one of the leading providers in the global telecommunication industry. Siemens is the only company in the sector to offer its customers a complete portfolio from terminals for consumers to complex network infrastructures for companies and operators together with the associated services. Siemens Communications is the world leader in innovation in the fields of convergent technologies and products and services for mobile, fixed and corporate networks.

Samsung Announces Advanced Graphics Memory Cards

Monday, August 13th, 2007

Samsung Electronics . announced that it has developed the industry’s fastest 2.0 gigabit per second (Gbps) 90 nanometer (nm) 512Mb graphics double data rate 3 (GDDR3) dynamic random access memory (DRAM). Samsung’s new 2.0Gbps high-speed graphics solution runs at up to 8.0GigaBytes per second (GBps), which is 70 percent faster than the conventional 1.2Gbps device, making it ideal for high-quality images and fast animation in PCs, workstations and high-end game consoles. Samsung also initiated mass production of its 1.6Gbps 512Mb GDDR3, which was developed in December 2004. Generating 6.4GBps transmission rates, the 1.6Gbps GDDR3 is available in graphic cards with a maximum density of 1GB by combining sixteen monolithic 512Mb GDDR3s together.

The new GDDR3 incorporates a JEDEC standard 136-ball package. 512Mb GDDR3 is expected to support the faster data transmission rate for higher resolution images in next generation game consoles. Samsung’s technology diversification strategy is reflected in its comprehensive graphics memory line up. Since introducing the industry’s first 1.0Gbps 128Mbit GDDR1/GDDR2 in 2002, Samsung has now become the first to secure a full line up of GDDR memory technology. Market research firm, Mercury Research, predicts that the global g raphics DRAM market will increase 43 percent to $1.5 billion ( US ) in 2005 and exceed $2 billion ( US ) in 2006. Samsung’s 1.6Gbps 90nm 512Mb GDDR3 DRAMs are available now in volume production worldwide.

Sony Ericsson at 3GSM World Congress 2007

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

Sony Ericsson president Miles Flint comments: “In our first five years we have successfully established ourselves as an aspirational brand in the mobile phone market. We continue to build on this with products such as the W880, a super-slim, high performance 3G Walkman®, that will begin to ship this month. We know what consumers want. With recent announcements of more mid- and low-end handsets such as the K550 Cyber-shot™ and the W200 Walkman® phone, we are now making the Sony Ericsson brand accessible to a wider range of consumers. We aim to make the Sony Ericsson experience aspirational at all price points in the portfolio, from high-end phones to our new talk and text phones, the J110, J120, K200 and K220 models.” 2006 was a record year for sales, net income and profit for Sony Ericsson. The company sold 60 million music enabled phones, 17 million of which were Walkman® handsets. In the same period, 4.5 million Cyber-shot™ phones were sold. Since the beginning of the year Sony Ericsson has made a series of announcements that build on the momentum of 2006, with nine new handsets for the GSM market, and in Japan NTT DoCoMo, Inc. announced two new phones by Sony Ericsson, including the first BRAVIA brand handset which delivers mobile TV functionality. Sony Ericsson has also announced its first HSDPA product, the Tri-Band HSDPA/UMTS and Quad-Band EDGE/GPRS PC300 Mobile Broadband PC Card for laptops, and a host of new accessories that enable consumers to enhance their experience of entertainment and communications on the move.

Making phones available at lower price points requires improvements in cost efficiencies at high production volumes while protecting quality. To this end, at the end of January Sony Ericsson announced it plans to manufacture mobile phones in Chennai, India in partnership with Flextronics and Foxconn, its global outsourcing manufacturing partners. This will enable Sony Ericsson to offer appealing products at even more competitive price points, especially at the lowest end of the portfolio. Shortly before 3GSM World Congress Sony Ericsson completed its acquisition of the Swedish software company UIQ Technology AB from Symbian Ltd following full regulatory ratification. The company plans to give more details on its strategy for the development of UIQ Technology during 3GSM. Miles Flint concludes: “We have started 2007 in a very strong position, announcing more new products at a wider range of price points than ever before this early in the year. Looking ahead, we fully expect millions more people to enjoy the benefits of the Sony Ericsson brand, making us well placed to gain further market share this year.

When it’s time to share the radio play-list with a wider audience, the J120 features a loudspeaker through which the radio can be played. This can also be used as a speakerphone when you tire of the radio and decide to call a friend. This compact and striking phone, finished in Night Black with ‘FM Radio’ detail, really stands out from the crowd. The J120 will be available in selected markets from Q2 2007.
